Our society is obsessed with thinness and diets. If you look at any magazine, internet headline or label on your breakfast cereal, everything is giving us the message that we need to be thin in order to be happy. Losing weight can be so complicated; less calories, low carb, high fiber, low fat (but now high fat is good for you?), more exercise, burning more calories through running, but I should be lifting weights too because that burns more calories in the long run, etc, etc, etc.
Figuring out all of these messages and which ones you should listen to and which ones you should ignore can be so complicated and confusing! It’s enough to make anyone give up and order a triple banana split sundae.
If you have been dieting for a long time and have found that you now weigh more than you ever have, perhaps it is time to try something different. The fact is, diets don’t work! Nearly all dieters (90-95%) gain their weight back within 1-5 years. Diets may help you lose weight for the short term, but almost always the weight comes back, and more of it.
The reason is that diets are a short term solution to a long term problem. Diets leave you feeling deprived, hungry, and often cause you to eliminate entire food groups, or label foods as “good” or “bad”. This leads to an overeating backlash once you reach your ‘goal weight’. In addition, labeling food as “good” or “bad” perpetuates feeling guilt and shame any time a “bad” food is consumed. All of this is a recipe for feeling extremely frustrated!
We will discuss your personal weight and health goals, and how to achieve them. No diets. No restriction of any food groups. I will help you get back in touch with your hunger and fullness cues, your cravings and what they really mean, as well as your body and how you can view it as an ally; rather than something to hate and reprimand every time you gain back the weight you lost after your latest diet. We will work on discovering what you are truly hungry for, and how you can fulfill that need with other things besides food.
Step off the seesaw of deprivation and overeating, and contact me to schedule an appointment to find freedom in the war against your body!
